ROCKFORT STORY

It is the belief of the Hindus that Himalayas (Kailaash) is the Nature’s Temple and LORD SHIVA dwells there. He appears to give his blessings to all .Devars and Munivars who did severe prayers and meditation to have the vision of the Lord. At the same time they praised Adhiseshan, (the snake God) who came there. When (Wind God) Vaayu heard the words of Devars,  he became angry and jealousy. He criticised and teased Adhiseshan as Neither having legs, nor having ears, but having twin tongues.

At that same juncture, Adhiseshan became angry. There was a great war between Adhiseshan and the Wind God, Vaayu, as who is more powerful. Aadhiseshan encircled the Maha Meru hill (Himalaya) and challenged Vaayu whether he could relieve Himalayas off his clutches. Vaayu tried hard and accepted his defeat.

It is said that during their fight, there was a lot of Natural calamities like floods, cyclone etc. Three pieces of the mountain broke and fell at different places. Out of the 3 pieces, one is at Rockfort in Tiruchirappalli. The Other two are at Triconamalai (SriLanka) and Sri Kalahasthi (Andra Pradesh).
